About Us

Â
Founded in Athens in 2016 by bandoneonist and arranger Dimos Vougioukas, Athens Tango Ensemble brings together the timeless elegance, passion and dramatic intensity of tango in a distinctive contemporary concert experience.
Rooted in the great tradition of Argentine tango, the ensemble explores the music of composers such as Carlos Gardel, Juan D’Arienzo, Francisco Canaro, AnÃbal Troilo and Astor Piazzolla, combining authentic tango expression with sophisticated arrangements and the individual musical character of its members.

Since its formation, Athens Tango Ensemble has established a strong presence on the Greek concert scene, appearing at prestigious venues and cultural institutions including the Megaron – The Athens Concert Hall, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, ERT and Half Note Jazz Club. The ensemble has also presented its music internationally, performing in Belgium, Sweden, Poland and other European countries.
In 2018, the ensemble released its debut album, Athens Tango Ensemble, through the General Music label.

At the centre of the ensemble is the unmistakable sound of the bandoneon, an instrument that embodies the soul of tango. Through the expressive playing of Dimos Vougioukas and the ensemble’s carefully crafted arrangements, the music moves naturally between the intimate melancholy of traditional tango and the powerful, innovative language of Piazzolla.
Athens Tango Ensemble approaches tango as a living musical tradition — one that transcends geographical and cultural boundaries. Its performances bring together musicians, dancers and audiences in a shared experience where music, movement and emotion become one.
